Weekly Crochet Square: Square 7

Continuing on with the basic stitches that I promised you, this week we are going to do one of my personal favorite basic stitches: the half double crochet.
I like the stitch because It is easy to work and has a little more bulk than a single crochet, yet is a bit tighter than a double crochet. It's kind of a happy medium.

Half Double Crochet Square 

What You Need:
Size K crochet hook
Worsted weight yarn

Stitch Abbreviations:
ch = chain
hdc = half double crochet
yo = yarn over (put the yarn over the hook)

Getting Started:
Making a chain: Make a slip knot in your yarn, leaving a small loop. Insert the crochet hook into the loop. Yarn over (yo) and pull the yarn through the loop on the hook, dropping that loop and creating a new loop on the hook with the yarn you just pulled through. This is one chain.
Continue to make a chain by yo and pulling through.
Making a half double crochet (hdc): Yarn over hook, then, in a chain stitch, insert the hook through one strand of a chain  stitch; in a hdc  (or other stitch) insert the hook in the top 2 strands of the stitch. Once the hook is inserted, yo and pull a loop through the stitch, yarn over and pull through all three stitches on hook. You have just made a half double crochet.
Finishing off: To finish off, you simply make a ch, pulling the loop long. Snip the loop in the middle and pull it tight. You can weave in the end.

What You Do:
Ch 23
Row 1: Hdc in the third ch from the hook and in each ch across. Turn. (I usually put your stitch count in parenthesis here) (21)
 Rows 2-18: Ch 2, hdc in each stitch across. Turn. (21)
Finish off.
